Picking in the wild
Mushrooms containing psilocybine and/or psilocine exist (almost) everywhere on earth. In former days one thought that the psilocybine mushrooms only grew in and around Mexico. But meanwhile there are already more than 190 different types that have been discovered all around the globe.
In certain periods of the year a lot of people can be found in the dunes, the forests or the fields looking for magic mushrooms. Most types grow in their natural habitat in between grass, on dung or wood. This differs a lot per type.
"The little mushroom comes or itself, no one knows when, like the wind that comes we know not when nor why…" (Anonymous Mazatec indian)
This quote indicates (truthfully) that you can never know where the mushrooms that you are in search of exactly will grow. It is always the question of being at the right place at the right time.
A mushroom might contain psilocybine and/or psilocin, when these two visual aspects apply:
- the tracks of the type are purple/brown to black
- het flesh of the mushroom discolors blue when bruised.
But even with these two characteristics present, the presence of psylocibine is definitely not yet guaranteed. There are some deadly look-a-likes, who can also grow in between the psilocybine-mushrooms. Therefore picking these mushrooms in the wild can be extremely dangerous. Distinguishing the deadly ones from the good ones is in some cases only justified with vast mycological expertise. We strongly recommend NOT to go search for these mushrooms when you have (too) little or none knowledge about them!
